As of yesterday, zero hours contracts in (nearly) all circumstances are illegal in Ireland. Thanks to the Employment (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2018, workers in casual and precarious jobs now have greater certainty around the length of their working week. The Indo reports managers in the construction sector appear to be benefiting most in terms of pay increases as they experienced advertised salary growth of 18pc between 2017-2018 to €57,000. This news comes construction labourers seek pay rises of 12% over three years (as reported in yesterday's digest.)

 

Leo Varadkar challenged a report which shows that the number of working single-parent families living in poverty has doubled in five years (also covered in yesterday's digest.) The report from the Society of St Vincent de Paul found that in 2012 one in 11 working lone parents was living below the poverty line, however that jumped to one in five in 2017. The Fine Gael leader, however, said that statistics from the Central Statistics Office show that consistent poverty and deprivation among lone parents has reduced in the last four years.

As International Women's Day approaches, a survey of Irish female professionals shows that four out of five women believes the glass ceiling still exists in the workplace. The survey by female business group Network Ireland also found that one in four women did not go for a promotion due to family commitments. While more than a third of respondents believe that being female has impacted negatively on their career progression.
