New UK Prime Minister Liz Truss has been reshuffling her cabinet this evening with Therese Coffey being rewarded with a key job while Dominic Raab was ousted.

Ms Truss appointed Ms Coffey as Secretary of State for Health and Social Care as well as Deputy Prime Minister.

The former work and pensions secretary was widely expected to be rewarded with a key job in the Cabinet, having thrown her weight behind Ms Truss's leadership bid early on.

Britain's new Chancellor is Kwasi Kwarteng who has the job of holding the UK's purse strings as the country faces a worsening cost-of-living crisis.

The former energy and business secretary takes over following Nadhim Zahawi's brief stint in the role.

Mr Kwarteng becomes the UK's fourth ethnic-minority chancellor in a row - with Rishi Sunak and Sajid Javid having also held the job in the past four years.

Suella Braverman, who became the first person to launch a bid to become the next prime minister before being knocked out of the race and deciding to back Liz Truss, has held on to her place in Cabinet and gained a promotion to Home Secretary, taking over from Priti Patel.

Ms Braverman was made the Government's most senior lawyer in February 2020, taking the role of Attorney General amid Boris Johnson's growing battle with the judiciary.

James Cleverly is the new Foreign Secretary. The MP for Braintree previously held the role of Education Secretary.

Meanwhile, Dominic Raab was also ousted from the cabinet as the deputy prime minister became the first causality of Liz Truss's reshuffle after she entered No 10.

Mr Raab, who was justice secretary as well as second in command to Boris Johnson, had backed Ms Truss's rival Rishi Sunak in the Tory leadership race and had called her tax plans an "electoral suicide note".

MR Raab announced he would be supporting the government from the backbenches.

Among others to lose their jobs was Grant Shapps who leaves his position as Transport Secretary. Mr Shapps said he would be a "strong independent voice" on the Tory backbenches.

New Northern Ireland Secretary appointed

Chris Heaton-Harris has been appointed as the new Northern Ireland Secretary.

New Northern Secretary Chris Heaton-Harris brings a unique skillset to the job. But as a renowned hardline Brexiteer, he won't be viewed as a neutral arbiter.

Mr Heaton-Harris replaces Shailesh Vara. Mr Vara tweeted: "Great privilege and honour to serve as Secretary of State at the Northern Ireland Office and work with some excellent people.

Mr Vara, a supporter of Ms Truss's rival Rishi Sunak in the Tory leadership contest, was not expected to retain his position.

He was appointed to the role in Boris Johnson's caretaker administration in July.

Anne-Marie Trevelyan has been appointed as Transport Secretary, taking over the portfolio from Grant Shapps.

Kemi Badenoch has been appointed as Trade Secretary while Michelle Donelan has been appointed as Secretary of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.
