Jess Phillips has endorsed Lisa Nandy in the Labour leadership race, saying she was the best placed candidate to “win back the trust of the electorate”.

Ms Nandy, the MP for Wigan, has cleared the threshold to get on the ballot paper after receiving the support of the Chinese For Labour group.

Ms Phillips, who pulled out of the leadership race on Tuesday, said she would make Ms Nandy her first preference, followed by Sir Keir Starmer, 57.

“Jess will be backing the candidates who she thinks can bring the party together and win back the trust of the electorate,” a spokesman said.
