'The dignity of labour'
by Hazel Gavigan

Legislation has been proposed to confirm the pay terms and conditions of thousands of construction workers in legally enforceable Sectoral Employment Orders, which were recently deemed unconstitutional by the High Court.  In his ruling, Mr Justice Garrett Simons found that provisions of the Industrial Relations (Amendment) Act 2015 which underpinned legally enforceable SEOs negotiated between employer groups and unions under the auspices of the Labour Court was unconstitutional.

Elsewhere in emerging industrial legislation, another bill has been published to protect workers and stop tactical redundancies in light of the unfair treatment of Debenhams workers.

The Indo reports that Shannon Airport workers are set to consider industrial action after the company announced plans to cut pay by 20% until 2023. Fórsa's Johnny Fox said a government task force on aviation reports this week and the company should have waited for its recommendations before announcing the cuts. Meanwhile, the Shannon Group, which operates Shannon Airport and tourist attractions around the country is hiring consultants to help draft a major sustainability programme.

Tony Fitzpatrick, Director of Industrial Relations with the INMO said that they have encountered an issue with several members where nurses are being refused holiday leave due to understaffing. It's even reported that one ICU nurse is quitting her job because she can't take a holiday. Meanwhile, an independent TD has told the Dáil that frontline health workers should get extra paid leave for their role in battling coronavirus.

Unite the union, which represents workers at Drogheda magnesia plant Premier Periclase, has announced that its members are set to take strike action later this month after the company didn't engage with workers on their proposals for shutdown. The company is also proposing to lay off members or put them on reduced hours, while transferring work to non-union labour and retaining contractors on site.

And finally, today's Zen is The Academic's latest single Acting My Age released by the midlands lads earlier this week.
