Oblique Strategies

Ciara and John Lee at yesterday's rally at the Russian embassy on Orwell Road in Dublin.

In his speech at last evening's #StandWithUkraine rally, Kevin Callinan extended the solidarity of the trade union movement in Ireland to the people of Ukraine. You can watch Kevin's full speech here.

Among the crowd there were some old friends and colleagues, including Peter Nolan and Pat Bolger and former IMPACT general secretary Peter McLoone. Billy Hannigan also drew my attention to the presence of Ciara and John Lee (pictured right), whose mother Fiona is a former PSEU president (and quoted in this Irish TImes coverage). Among the NUJ members present was veteran reporter Charlie Bird.

Elsewhere, Covid continues to make its presence felt, as University Hospital Limerick moves to its highest level of escalation, illustrating the renewed pressure on health services due to the current wave of the virus, prompting questions about the reintroduction of restrictions.

Elsewhere in health, the Indo reports on the 'postcode lottery' of access to home support services, and in other news, the new Labour party leader says Ireland needs a pay rise.

Fórsa is supporting tomorrow's rally by SIPTU at the P&O Ferries offices to show solidarity with RMT union and the 800 workers who have been sacked by the ferry company in the North & the UK. The rally is at 12 noon (Saturday 26th) at the P&O offices (Terminal 3, North Quay Extensions, Dublin 1 - opposite the 03 Arena).

Zen

I took the photo above near Berlin's Brandenburg Gate this day last week. As the sun set on a spectacular spring evening, and Berliners eased into their weekend around the smattering of beverage kiosks on the Unter Den Linden, the street hosted a series of vigils and small, personal demonstrations by Ukrainian citizens. Beyond the gate were two separate anti-war rallies.

While there was a strong police presence the atmosphere was peaceful, even contemplative. Like last night's rally at the Russian embassy in Dublin, people gathered to show solidarity and express their shock, revulsion and opposition to Russia's predatory war.

Have a very happy, safe and peaceful weekend.

Niall
