The Indo reports that the HSE has advised patients that some appointments and procedures will be cancelled as a result of the planned nurses' strike on Wednesday, and has advised people to stay away from hospital A&E departments.
As Brexit draws closer, it's reported that there were a record number of applications from UK jobseekers looking to work in Ireland in 2018 according to recruitment website Irishjobs.ie. IDA figures this month show 55 significant Brexit-related investments made by multinationals in Ireland in 2018, reported to have created more than 4,500 new jobs.
News broke last Friday that the former Clery's store in Dublin's O'Connell Street is to be redeveloped. Siptu will seek clarity from the new owners about an agreement to boost job opportunities in the area. The union said a community benefits scheme was formally agreed under Dublin City Council, and is part of the planning process for the site.
The front pages today are largely led by Brexit, with the UK Independent reporting a drop in student support for the Labour party, 69% of whom favour a 'Final Say' referendum. The Irish Daily Mail leads with a report about the abuse experienced by local authority traffic wardens. That story isn't online but we have a hard copy of the Mail in the Communications Unit.
Your moment of Zen today mines nostalgia from the summer of 1988. Grolsch bottle tops are replacing shoelaces, the Levi jeans are stone-washed and baggy, and bandanas are a thing, while the Goss twins (and the other one, Craig) are in the charts demanding to know when they're going to be famous (including these lyrics: You've read Karl Marx and you've taught yourself to dance / You're the best by far!).
The boys (minus Craig) have had another recent shot at fame. A documentary, Bros: When the screaming stops, screened over Christmas on BBC2 and again last weekend, captures the action around a comeback show. It's the funniest rock documentary ("or should I say rockumentary?" - Marty De Bergi) since This Is Spinal Tap or Metallica's Some Kind of Monster. Here's the trailer (below) with a review linked to the photo above.
