IMPACT News Digest - Monday 10th October 2016

Good morning colleagues,

Here's a look at some of today's front pages.

Most lead with pre-budget news, while some UK titles focus on last night's US 'presidential' debate.

Digressing from that pattern is the UK Independent, which leads with the Saudi attack on a funeral in Yemen that killed 140 people, while the Guardian leads with Britain to push post-Brexit UK immigration controls back to Irish border. This is about alleged UK plans to shift the frontline of immigration controls to Ireland’s ports and airports in order to avoid having to introduce a post-Brexit “hard border”.

The Indo reports that thousands of public sector pensioners 'are in line for a triple boost next year,' and reports that public servants, including TDs, who earn over €65,000 will see pay restoration measures applied from next April, a reversal of temporary pay cuts that were imposed under the Haddington Road Agreement.

Last Friday, Public Affairs Ireland published an IMPACT article, Dismantling JobBridge can pave the way to better workplace activation schemes, and in his latest blog, NERI director Tom Healy asks who are 'the 'squeezed middle': "Who is in the middle of the income distribution? You might be
surprised by the answer. And who took the biggest pain during the 2008-2013 period? You might be still surprised". See here

Your moment of Zen today sees Robert De Niro channeling Jimmy Conway (Goodfellas) and Jake La Motta (Raging Bull) to explain his feelings about Donald Trump.

He's a mook Bobby.
