IMPACT News Digest - Wednesday 12th October 2016

Good morning colleagues,

Here's a look at some of today's front pages.  There's plenty of budget coverage in all the papers, with one article saying the €1.3bn Budget package doesn’t matter much because the rules are set in Brussels.

RTE reports that the new Pay commission will report on pay restoration by the middle of next year.

Kevin Callinan expressed union concerns that extra childcare investment does nothing to address low pay in the sector, in his contribution on Newstalk and on Twitter yesterday afternoon.  The ESRI study Growing up in Ireland finds that social advantage still shapes the life chances of children.

Unions and employers are at odds over the retention of lower tourism tax rate with Congress stating “That money could have built 3000 affordable homes for people. Despite high profits, the sector continues to have the highest number of Minimum Wage workers in the economy and the employers refuse to engage with the Joint Labour Committee."

The Irish Congress of Trade Unions said there were some small steps but the budget lacked ambition.

Today's Zen takes us to the American Presidental election, the question is - the date.

Enjoy your day.
