IMPACT News Digest - Friday 16th September 2016

Good morning colleagues,

Here's a look at some of today's front pages.

The Irish Times reports that Minister Katherine Zappone will introduce a system of subsidised childcare at next month's budget. It is understood that the subsidy would be paid directly to the childcare provider. The size of the subsidy would depend on the results of a means test. It may cover up to 100% of childcare costs for low-income families.

Dublin Bus drivers are on strike again today. The industrial action escalated dramatically yesterday afternoon when an additional 13 days of strike action were announced. Minister Shane Ross has said that he will not intervene directly in the dispute.

The Journal.ie has 'FactChecked' an information leaflet produced by the NBRU. The results show that the drivers have a fair and legitimate claim to pay increases.

Ireland does not spend enough on education by OECD standards. Spending on education fell by 7% during the recession (2008 - 2013). Over the same period, spending increased by 8% on average in the OECD.

The value of Irish exports fell by €1.15 Bn last month. This is believed to be the first sign that the effects of Brexit are beginning to manifest themselves in the Irish economy.

In IMPACT news: There is an urgent need for pay restoration in the community and voluntary sector. IMPACT is hosting a briefing on the sector on Wednesday September 21st. The briefing will bring together results from the 'Caring - at What Cost?' research and workplace testimonials from IMPACT members working in the sector. IMPACT national secretary for Health & Welfare will give an address and the briefing will end with a Q&A.

The event takes place at 11am on Wednesday the 21st of September 2016 in the Dun's Library (Royal College of Physicians, Frederick House, 6 Kildare Street, Dublin 2).

Your zen this morning consists of the pianist and producer Chilly Gonzales dissecting 'Under Pressure' by Queen and David Bowie.

Have a good day.
