The New Union Project is a proposal to combine the strength of over 80,000 members in three unions representing members in the public service as well as the commercial sector and state agencies. The Civil, Public and Services Union (CPSU), IMPACT and the Public Service Executive Union (PSEU) have been engaged in talks about the creation of a new union throughout 2016.
The talks were backed by delegates from all three unions who supported conference motions this year to continue the process. The proposal to form a new, single, union from three existing unions will be put to the members of all three in a ballot in 2017, once talks about details have been completed.
Part of the process of creating a new union involves giving it a name. The three unions have decided to open up a competition to members of all three unions to suggest a name for the proposed new union, and a Microsoft Surface Pro 4 tablet will be awarded for the best suggestion.
