The Ordnance Survey branch of IMPACT has organised a sponsored cycle from Portlaoise to Galway (145km) to raise much needed funds for victims of the two recent earthquakes in Nepal. The fundraising event has been arranged to coincide with next week's Services & Enterprise and Local Government divisional conferences in Galway.

Mick Scully, of the Ordnance Survey branch, will undertake the solo cycle next Wednesday (20th May).

The branch has appealed to IMPACT members to support the fundraising event, and all proceeds from the cycle will go to the UNICEF Nepal Children’s Crisis Fund.

Any IMPACT branches  wishing to donate can contribute by sending a cheque payable to: “UNICEF Nepal Children’s Crisis Fund” and post to Gerry Duffy, Treasurer, Ordnance Survey IMPACT Branch, Ordnance Survey Office, Government Buildings, Hebron Road, Kilkenny City (Ph 085-1610600).

The branch will also arrange to make a collection during the conferences, which run from Wednesday 20th to Friday 22nd May at the Clayton Hotel, Galway and the Ballybritt racecourse.

What your donation can do for children in Nepal

  • €23 provides high-energy therapeutic milk for five toddlers and gives them the vitamins and minerals they need to survive
  • €49 provides five families with emergency water kits including containers, buckets, soap and water purification tablets. This means families can collect, store and purify vital water
  • €99 provides 230 life-saving water salts to children who need hydration in an emergency.

Mick Scully explained why he decided to undertake the cycle: "I'm a keen cyclist so I'm always happy to have a reason to get out and ride my bike. For me, it's an everyday thing, but I never take it for granted. For the people of Nepal, the recent earthquakes have been devastating, and our branch wanted to raise funds for them. Conference is an important time for IMPACT members, it brings us all together to talk about our direction and our futures. For this conference, we'd like to raise awareness of the devastation in Nepal, and ask members and branches to make a donation. Any funds we raise will make a life saving difference in Nepal."
