IMPACT News Digest -Tuesday 27th September 2016

Good morning colleagues,

Here's a look at some of today's front pages. The deferred Dublin Bus strike gets a mention, as does the presidential debate in the US. You can see highlights from the US presidential debate here.

Cool heads needed to solve our pay disputes is the headline in an on-line comment piece in the Independent.ie. It's well worth a read, while praising the pragmatic stance of trade union leaders the article goes on to say "Over that eight-year period, pretty much everyone in the Irish nation took a hit. All public sector workers, to their credit, took reductions in pay and conditions with a large element of stoicism. Ireland was spared the pointless and damaging convulsions of public sector strikes and street protests which compounded the difficulties in other European economies.

Branches in the  GRA are reported to be at odds over pay proposal. While ASTI president Ed Byrne says teachers are ‘heading for full strike’ over the Landsdowne Road Agreement.

A strike by nurses and midwives could be on the cards, if one group of graduates does not receive a pay rise. The INMO, the PNA and SIPTU are staging a protest outside the Dáil today, before meeting with Health Minister Simon Harris. They are calling for an incremental credit to be restored for those who graduated between 2011 and 2015.

There is a boyant jobs market for graduates.

Finally, your Zen moment if you missed President Michael J Higgins on the Late Late Show on Friday it is definetly worth a look, probably at home as it's 30 minutes long.

Have a good day.

Martina O'Leary
