Fórsa has tentatively welcomed the approval of a 2% increase to current An Post pensions, following an what has been described as an “inordinate delay” in sanction by Government.

An Post retirees have been campaigning for the increase. It was due on January 1st this year but was delayed amid concerns over the long-term viability of the company’s pension scheme.

Unions including Fórsa, the Communications Workers Union (CWU), and the AHCPS initially raised the delay with An Post management, who then raised it with the Department of Environment, Climate and Communications.

The Minister for Public Expenditure Michael McGrath finally approved the payment, backdated to the start of the year, ensuring no financial loss to those affected.

Fórsa has been involved in an extensive campaign to secure the increase. While concerns regarding the funding of the pension scheme delayed progress, the minister’s approval comes as the pension scheme has moved into a stronger position in recent years.

Fórsa official Derek Kelleher said delay continues to cause hardship to those affected: “An Post pensioners awaiting this payment continue to suffer from unnecessary financial hardship and stress as a result of this unexplained delay.

“Given the robust health of the scheme and the current cost of living crisis there is no excuse for such delay,” he said.

Unions are now urging Government to confirm a date for payment.
