Fórsa has met with the Garda Commissioner over serious concerns regarding the lack of engagement centrally on the new policing model, and its impact on the Garda civilianisation programme.

Concerns were heightened by the pressing ahead of staff briefings on a local level by Chief Superintendents.

The proposed new model would see a transformation of the Garda regions, and a reduction in the number of Garda divisions from 28 to 19.

In a letter to members, Head of Division Derek Mullen described the engagement as “positive,” but warned that there is still the “possibility of serious industrial relations issues arising,” given the proposed changes are happening simultaneously with the biggest civilianisation programme in the history of An Garda Síochána.

Fórsa is preparing to visit the lead divisions over the coming months. “This is a time of huge importance for our members in An Garda Síochána, and we look forward to meeting on the ground over the coming weeks to ensure that we have the fullest engagement possible,” said Derek.
