Watching the events of the past week unfold in Ukraine has been horrifying, with innocent people dead, injured, displaced and facing all the ugly realities of war. But the reaction, determination and bravery of the Ukrainian people, and the solidarity shown by people across Europe and the world, has been truly inspiring.
As trade union members we know the value and importance of meaningful solidarity. And so today, at the request of many within our trade union community, I’m announcing the launch of our Fórsa Ukraine Appeal.
All money raised will be donated to organisations that can have the most significant impact in providing humanitarian aid to the people of Ukraine. We are currently vetting organisations to ensure that the donation made in the name of Fórsa is given to organisations that share our values. We’ll be announcing the details shortly.
Along with trade unionists from across Europe and the globe, I have heard first hand from a number of Ukrainian trade union leaders, representing public service workers, who have outlined in great detail the consequences that have already taken place, their determination to resist and their request for practical support including humanitarian aid.
Since this idea of a fund-raising appeal was first raised with me, I’ve been blown away by how staff and activists have come together to make this appeal a reality, and I know that members and branches will respond with the generosity and solidarity we know exists within our Union.
Ní neart go cur le chéile,
