Residential social care workers have refused to cooperate with new educational arrangements at the Oberstown detention centre after qualified teaching staff were withdrawn from classrooms on foot of the coronavirus crisis.

Management told social care staff they must take on the new and additional role of classroom management when lessons recommenced, with teachers appearing on video.

There had been no consultation about the management of the changes.

Fórsa official Seán McElhinney said a comprehensive risk assessment would be required before the new roles could be carried out safely and reasonably.

Although Oberstown’s school setting was closed at the onset of Covid-19 restrictions, residential care workers have continued to provide a full service, including supporting residents with homework in the residential unit.
