Attendees at Fórsa’s libraries group annual general meeting heard calls for the union to investigate staffing levels in local authority library services.

Members at best attended AGM in many years, held last Wednesday (21st April) heard details of the massive expansion in online and social media activity undertaken by library staff since the Covid-19 pandemic began.

But, while there was support for these new innovative ways of providing services to the public, many members feared that local authorities would expect them to continue without adequate staffing once libraries reopened their traditional range of services.

The meeting also expressed a strong view that the term ‘non-professional library staff’ was highly inappropriate. The incoming executive committee, headed up by Gillian Kavanagh of Fórsa’s Meath branch, undertook to pursue both matters.

Fórsa’s libraries group represents branch librarians, library assistants, senior library assistants and library staff officers.
