The Labour Court has recommended that staff in the Wexford Women’s Refuge should be paid an increment for the first time in 11 years, after Fórsa took their case. It came after unions had raised the issue with management in the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC).

The refuge is a ‘section 56’ agency, mostly funded by Tusla. Like other similar agencies, increments were frozen in 2010 as part of a broader suite of austerity measures. Working hours were also reduced.

Since then, Fórsa and Siptu have been involved in lengthy discussions to reinstate increments.

“Importantly, it ensures that the connection to the public service pay scales remains. We know the public service pay scales are representative of best practice and ensures transparency and clear progression from a pay point of view. Without the connection to the public service scales, pay freezes could last indefinitely with no prospect of increases for staff despite increases in inflation,” she said.
