A new voice joins the Teaching Council

Head of the Education division of Fórsa, Andy Pike, has been appointed to serve on the Teaching Council of Ireland. The appointment was confirmed by the outgoing Minister for Education Norma Foley TD,  following a nomination from the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU).

The Teaching Council is the regulator of the teaching profession in Ireland. The role of the Council is to protect the public by promoting and regulating professional standards in teaching.

The Council’s statutory functions are set out in the Teaching Council Acts 2001, as amended and include maintaining and improving standards of teaching, maintaining the register of teachers, conducting ‘fitness to teach’ inquiries of any registered teacher, publishing and maintaining a professional conduct for teachers, which will include standards of teaching, knowledge, skill and competence, and promoting teachers’ ongoing learning.

Commenting on the appointment Andy said, “This is the first time that a Fórsa representative has been appointed to serve as one of the 37 members on the Teaching Council. This is real recognition of our expanding role within the education sector and is very welcome, I look forward to serving on the Teaching Council over the next 4 years and representing the valuable contribution our education workers make to Irish education.”
