On Tuesday 10th February Fórsa supported a demonstration organised by the Communications Workers’ Union (CWU), which was called to demand an end to the “unacceptable delay” to agreed pension increases for retired workers.
The workers, who were previously employed by An Post or eir, have been waiting on pension increases since last year, as they were due to be effective from January and June 2025. Over 20,000 retired workers are impacted.
Pension increases for retired workers at these companies must be signed off on by the Government. The increases were agreed between unions and the companies, and although the CWU has written to both Minister Patrick O’Donovan and the Taoiseach, no action has been taken.
Hundreds of retired workers expressed their frustration outside Dáil Éireann on Tuesday. They were joined by union members from Fórsa, the CWU and the AHCPS to demonstrate solidarity.
Speaking about the issue, head of division Hazel Nolan said: “When workers retire, they should be sure that they will have a decent pension. Instead, too often, precarity goes hand in hand with being retired. In this instance, the Government’s delay in paying agreed pension increases is nothing short of disgraceful. We need the Government to do right by these pensioners and sign off on the increases immediately.”
