A new mental health service for frontline workers in healthcare, retail, education and elsewhere has been launched. Anyone working in frontline settings can access the service, provided by mental health professionals supported by trained volunteers.

The service provides for job-specific groups and groups based on shared issues including stress, burnout and maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

Announcing the launch of the service, health minister Stephen Donnelly said it had been a difficult year for everyone across the country, but especially for frontline workers. “While the majority of people were asked to stay at home, our frontline workers went to work. We owe them a debt of gratitude,” he said.

The service is being provided by turn2me. Its clinical manager Brian Holohan said there was much evidence that peer support is effective and could serve as a “helpful gateway for people who haven’t reached out for help before.”

Sessions are scheduled at different times to accommodate shift workers and participants will also have the option to remain anonymous when online.
