Representatives of Fórsa’s Municipal Employees Division have participated in a number of meetings with management over a proposed Dublin City Council ‘super depot’ in Ballymun, which would house a range of operations in a single location.

Officially called the North City Operations Depot, the super depot would be the base for waste management services, electrical services, public lighting, housing, roads maintenance, traffic, drainage, surface water maintenance unit and stores, as well as he administrative support to these departments.

Fórsa says this massive project presents a unique opportunity for management and unions to engage from the design stage to completion, to ensure that the facility is fit for purpose, and that any potential challenges are addressed prior to its completion.

The site is owned by Dublin City Council and was selected for a number of reasons including its accessibility to a good network of roads and appropriate zoning for depot use. The location is designated for redevelopment in the Ballymun Local Area Plan.

The super depot proposal has the potential to provide high quality facilities for the council’s direct labour staff, which would enable them to operate safely, efficiently and effectively.

It is further expected to release existing depot sites for more appropriate development including the provision of around 750 social housing units.

According to Dublin City Council’s statement, the new depot is scheduled to be operational in early 2023.

More details are expected to emerge as engagement continues.
