CORU registration deadline draws closer for social care workers
by Hannah Deasy

On 30th November 2025 the title ‘social care worker’ will become a legally protected title in Ireland. This means anyone working as a social care worker, social care leader, deputy social care manager or social care manager, will need to be registered with CORU, the official body for regulating health and social care professions.

This represents the culmination of a two-year transitionary period during which existing social care professionals could apply for official registration. Registration is part of the statutory regulation of the profession, which was long fought for by the union.

This week CORU released a short guide with crucial information and quick links for those who are still completing the application process. You can access that document here.

Over the past two years Fórsa has run online and in person events around the country to support members as they complete the CORU registration process.

Speaking about the events national secretary Linda Kelly said: “Registration was a complex process, so we were determined to support members through it. We negotiated the fee down to €100, kept it at that rate and provided guidance wherever members needed it.”

“Statutory regulation brings with it recognition for the role of social care professionals which is welcome, given the importance of their role in the Irish health and social care sectors.”

Linda continued: “The deadline is next week so for those who have yet to finalise their application, do so without delay. After the deadline the register will come into effect, and workers who have not applied to be on it will not be able to use the legally protected title of social care worker. If that is the case, you won’t benefit from the recognition and security of having a protected title.”
