Union members tireless efforts on DV supports bear fruit

The Department of Education has confirmed that it is putting the final touches on a new domestic violence and abuse policy which it expects to publish in the coming days.

The policy comes following extensive discussions with the union. Throughout the discussions drafts were shared for observations, and our suggestions were taken on board and incorporated into the new policy.

Fórsa had requested that the new policy take consideration of the complex and sensitive nature of this subject. Our aim was that the circular should be as supportive as possible, by not just outlining entitlements to members, but also providing guidance, advice and support for staff who find themselves in these difficult situations.

Speaking about the new circular Fórsa assistant general secretary Shane Lambert welcome the publication of the circular and outlined the process that lead to the document said. He said:  “This policy comes following a claim lodged to the SNA Industrial Relations forum some time ago.”

“We wanted to ensure that the circular was as comprehensive as it could be, that’s why we took part in an extensive consultation process to develop the document.”

Shane went on to say: “Fórsa members have been pivotal to the campaign for paid domestic violence leave. Thanks to their advocacy and determination we are seeing real progress in the development of workplace supports for anyone who is in an abusive relationship.”

Special needs assistant and Fórsa member Linda O’Sullivan said: “It was great to be involved in the process of developing this document, which I hope will be of real support to anyone who needs it.  No one really leaves their home life at the door when they turn up at work, abuse takes over all parts of your life so employers have a duty to be involved.

“We judged that it was critical that the Department engage with Women’s Aid and Spectrum Life, the employee assistance service for schools’ staff, to garner their views. The Department did that and this document is all the better for it.”
