The Government has extended its Covid-related income supports as a part of its ‘resilience and recovery’ plan, which was published earlier this week.

Both the employment wage subsidy scheme (EWSS) and the pandemic unemployment payment (PUP) are to remain in place until the end of June.

There will be relief among the thousands of aviation workers who depend on these supports. But Fórsa has called for longer-lasting and enhanced industry-specific wage supports, plus easier access to mortgage payment breaks.

In evidence to the Oireachtas transport committee earlier this month, the union warned that thousands of aviation-dependent jobs could be lost permanently unless the Government acts to support the sector.

Fórsa official Ashely Connolly welcomed the extension of the income support schemes, but said staff in airlines and other aviation companies would need assistance beyond the end of June.

“We are proposing an aviation income support scheme similar to that in place in Germany, which enables employers to reduce hours rather than laying staff off, with Government income support for the time employees can’t work,” she said.

The State has so far paid out a total of over €9 billion in pandemic unemployment payments, the employment wage subsidy scheme, and the temporary wage subsidy scheme that preceded it.
