Following intensive discussions at the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC), Fórsa and unions representing workers in the Dublin Fire Brigade (DFB) have achieved a successful outcome.
The agreement comes after extensive discussions with DFB management in order to avert industrial action that members voted for in September.
Planned industrial action was in opposition to the proposed introduction of a new computer-aided dispatch system (CAD), as part of the new National Mobilisation and Communications (NMAC) system.
The new system ignited concerns amongst DFB members as it would cover fire and rescue calls but not ambulance calls. Members feared this would cause unnecessary delays in dispatching DFB-operated ambulances.
Municipal employees’ division industrial officer, Jay Power, said that under the agreement, “there is full commitment to retain and expand the Dublin Fire Brigade Emergency Room Control Centre, which manages fire and emergency calls for Dublin and the wider eastern region of Ireland.”
Jay praised members for their support and engagement throughout the discussions. He said: “For our members, this was about keeping the public safe. They took it very seriously, and they were there every step of the way.”
Additionally, the WRC has appointed an independent chair to further facilitate high-level talks between the stakeholders involved in the introduction of the new NMAC system.
Jay said: “This situation shows how important it is to undertake consultation with workers. A serious issue was missed, which workers spotted immediately. We’re hopeful that with the appointment of an independent chair, we can iron out any other issues as they come up.”
He concluded: “Our members never opposed the new system; they just wanted it done right. We will continue to be a voice for our members and ensure that we get the best possible dispatch system for members and for the people they keep safe.”
