May Day is marked in Ireland as a public holiday for the first time and trade union celebrates one hundred years.
Taoiseach Albert Reynolds leads the centenary cavalcade of Macnas performers, bands, dancers, fire eaters and thousands of trade unionists into Dame Street. Talking to RTÉ News, the Taoiseach commends the work of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions and the contribution they have made to growing the country and improving living standards over the past 100 years.
It was a day of marching bands.
National and international trade union groups were represented at the parade. The report includes contributions from Peter Cassells, Phil Flynn, Padraig Breathnach, Ray Bates and Ruari Quinn.
