Unions representing workers in the community and voluntary sector, including Fórsa, met Minister of State for Disability, Anne Rabbitte, this week to discuss pay and bargaining rights as part of the ICTU-led ‘valuing care: recognising work campaign.

Delegates described to the minister in detail how the pandemic had highlighted the invaluable and vital work that is carried out by workers in organisations in the sector, and set out the primary aims of the campaign:

  • To secure an immediate increase in pay of 3% for workers in the community and voluntary sector, in line with pay awards in the public sector
  • The establishment of a community and voluntary sector collective bargaining forum where pay, terms and conditions, staffing, training and the overall development of the sector can be negotiated. The forum would be comprised of representatives of employers, workers and funders including the main Government departments and agencies.

Minister Rabbitte sought a short position paper, and gave an undertaking that she will discuss the union position with her cabinet colleagues. The unions subsequently submitted a position paper, which is available to read HERE.

Unions plan to run a grassroots campaign in the coming weeks, and will encourage members to lobby their constituency TDs and senators.
