Fórsa has welcomed a process to explore the prospect of bringing household waste services back into public control in Dublin City Council (DCC).
The union met with a new sub-committee of DCC councillors in early September, on the back of the ‘More Power to You’ campaign, after councillors from a broad political spectrum had brought motions relating to the remunicipalising of waste disposal services to DCC.
The ‘More Power to You’ campaign calls for greater powers for local authorities and improved local democracy, housing, waste, water and energy services.
Fórsa’s head of local authorities Peter Nolan said unions had advised the sub-committee to study international best practice while drawing up proposals for returning services to public control.
The sub-committee is due to report back to DCC in October. Unions, including Fórsa, are also set to meet the sub-committee again for further consultation on the proposals.
Peter added that Fórsa is pleased that the councillors are taking steps to bring services back into public control. He also said there are plans to meet local councils around the country on the ‘More Power to You' campaign.
