The Undivided Five
by Niall Shanahan

A county councillor in Donegal is hoping to make progress on the provision of day care services when the North West Health Forum can resume its work now that the Fórsa industrial action in the HSE has been suspended.

Eolas magazine has this report on the new public service pay deal. Fórsa's ballot on the deal opened yesterday, and the Indo has its standard piece on what the new pay deal will mean for members of the Oireachtas.

Elsewhere, a survey of SIPTU members working in public transport has found a majority of them has experienced anti-social behaviour at work in the last year, while the Better In A Trade Union campaign launch receives coverage in Limerick and Louth.

Elsewhere, this long read by Jessica Traynor asks if we've entrusted our memories to a system that might destroy them. That system is data centres, and their role in Ireland’s vision of itself as a tech hub. There are now more than 80, and they use vast amounts of electricity. The CSO reported in 2021 that they use up to 18% of the Ireland’s metered electricity, the same amount as every urban household in the country combined.

Meanwhile, the Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence is due to hear a military representative group outline its significant concerns about new legislation. Congress representatives will also attend the meeting as the new legislation is due to give effect to the Government's decision to allow the military representative groups to associate with the ICTU for the first time.

Zen

Your Zen this morning is a gentle tune from A Winged Victory for the Sullen, an American musical duo comprised of Dustin O'Halloran and Adam Wiltzie. I saw them perform at the National Concert Hall about a week before the world closed down in 2020. I'm delighted to report they're back at the NCH in April.

Have a lovely day.

Niall
