No Fear

IALPA members completed a ballot yesterday, rejecting the recent interim Labour Court recommendation made in respect of its dispute with Aer Lingus. The story is covered by this morning's edition of RTÉ's Morning Ireland, the Business Post, Indo, RTÉ, the Irish Times, while a number of media outlets reported on Friday that Aer Lingus has missed out on the allocation of a second new aircraft by parent company IAG.

Elsewhere, Ireland experienced almost 1,100 excess deaths during the pandemic years of 2020 and 2021 with almost all occurring in the latter period, according to new research by the Society of Actuaries in Ireland.

Meanwhile, a survey of primary schools reveals that most primary schools say they have run deficits over the past year and have to rely on cash reserves to cover basic running costs.

Tomorrow, Wednesday 5th June, is Naksa Day, an annual day of commemoration for the Palestinian people of the displacement that accompanied Israel taking control of the West Bank and Gaza Strip, following the Six Day War in 1967. The Ireland Palestine Solidarity campaign has called for a Workplace Day of Action tomorrow.

The campaign encourages all workers, in small and large workplaces, across all sectors, to take action to mark the day, while ICTU are encouraging all unions to take part.

Zen

Kevin Barry's fourth novel, The Heart in Winter, has just surfaced to critical acclaim, and your Zen this morning is what's on Barry's cultural radar. His inclusion of the advice, on creativity, given to Bob Dylan by Liam Clancy is worth a click.

Have a great week.
