This morning's event will be attended by family members who have lost loved ones in work-related incidents, alongside representatives from the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, the Health and Safety Authority, Ibec and the Construction Industry Federation.</span></p> <p> </p> <p><span style="color: #000000;">Yesterday Sinéad O'Sullivan <a style="color: #000000;" href="https://forsatradeunion.newsweaver.com/1mlrewmmf5/11sje4qr4yr/external?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wrote in the Irish Times that Ireland’s population has never felt poorer</a> while being told it has never been richer: "<em>The State takes in €126bn a year and cannot create a civil protection agency, a gas storage facility or a train to Donegal." </em>Her oped attracts <a style="color: #000000;" href="https://forsatradeunion.newsweaver.com/1mlrewmmf5/ycl551jivob/external?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">some strong reaction</a> in the Letters page today.</span></p> <p> </p> <p><span style="color: #000000;">Meanwhile, economic uncertainty continues, as the Bank of Ireland says that while the Iran war puts <a style="color: #000000;" href="https://forsatradeunion.newsweaver.com/1mlrewmmf5/gd7m8eka6rb/external?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">an “unwelcome squeeze” on household income</a>, the spike in energy prices "<em>would not trigger a recession,</em>" while concerns in Ireland grow about <a style="color: #000000;" href="https://forsatradeunion.newsweaver.com/1mlrewmmf5/10dxoibexfc/external?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">the effect on the profitability</a> of food production.</span></p> <p> </p> <p><span style="color: #000000;">Elsewhere, the CWU has sought the Government's intervention as Meta contractor Covalen announced on Monday it was <a style="color: #000000;" href="https://forsatradeunion.newsweaver.com/1mlrewmmf5/1e9ifw35vzs/external?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">proposing to make 700 workers redundant</a> at its Dublin operation. </span></p> <p> </p> <p><span style="color: #000000;">Our retired colleague Eoin Ronayne and Fórsa rep Andy Meaney <a href="https://forsatradeunion.newsweaver.com/1mlrewmmf5/fcwu5i4i5rk/external?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">were among the guests at a</a></span><a href="https://forsatradeunion.newsweaver.com/1mlrewmmf5/fcwu5i4i5rk/external?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">n exhibition commemorating 11 young men from Waterford who volunteered in 1936</a> to fight against Franco's fascist assault on the Spanish Republic. The exhibition is at the Index Gallery of Central Library.</p> <p> </p> <p><span style="color: #000000;">Finally, here's an explainer on the European Commission's proposed new corporate framework, <a style="color: #000000;" href="https://forsatradeunion.newsweaver.com/1mlrewmmf5/7to38fi8zj4/external?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">called the '28th regime', or 'EU Inc.'</a> designed "to stop fledgling firms fleeing to America" which trade unions say would sacrifice the European social model.
