Bright Sparks
by Niall Shanahan

There's extensive media coverage of the ongoing dispute between IALPA and Aer Lingus. Face to face talks broke down yesterday afternoon, IALPA is due to announce the result of its industrial action ballot this evening and, following some developments late last night, talks between pilots and the airline resume at 10am this morning.

There's coverage in the Business Post, Indo, Irish Times, RTE, Irish Examiner, some tabloids, industry publications and regional titles. RTE's SixOne news is to cover the ballot result this evening.

Elsewhere, Gerard Howlin and Justine McCarthy debate the merits of an early general election.

Meanwhile, ICTU has welcomed the recommendation of the Low Pay Commission for the abolition of all sub-minimum rates of pay, for all employees. Currently, the National Minimum Wage Acts allow for lower, or sub-minimum rates for people aged under 20. The minimum wage for those aged 19 is 90% of the prevailing rate, for those aged 18 it is 80% and for those aged 17 and under it is 70%.

The Government is to commission an economic impact assessment and seek legal advice on the Low Pay Commission's recommendations.

Zen

Your Zen moment this morning is The Spark by Kabin Crew & Lisdoonvarna Crew, which I've been meaning to include here for the last few weeks. The kids behind this massive hit have had an apology from Fine Gael after the track had been appropriated (without permissions or credit) by the party for one of its election videos.

Have a great day.

Niall
