Mauser Chaos
by Niall Shanahan

Good morning colleagues,

The editorial in yesterday's Sunday Independent focused on the sentencing of Tegan McGhee at the Central Criminal Court last week, and how it focuses attention on child protection services’ "failure to safeguard the very children who rely on them," and cited the report, published by Fórsa last week, on morale in health and welfare services:

"It is easy to criticise Tusla from the outside. The agency has an enormously challenging job. A survey of members published last week by Fórsa, the largest trade union representing public sector workers, including Tusla, found that morale was low, burnout was widespread and three-quarters were considering quitting.Underfunded and understaffed, Tusla deals with 40,000 child referrals each year. There will be lives that were saved thanks to timely intervention; names, mercifully, that we never get to know. That is no consolation or excuse when a child’s life is lost in these circumstances."
