News from the teacher conferences include a report that about 21,000 members of ASTI are set to be excluded from new promotional posts, to be established by the Government to support students with Leaving Cert reforms. Other reports from the conferences focus on motions on Leaving Cert project work and the use of AI.

 

The TUI meet in Kilkenny this week. The union said tech barons who "do not share or support our values" must not be allowed to shape the education system through "voracious" profit-driven artificial intelligence (AI). Overall, the sense that unions are preparing for industrial action runs throughout most of this week's conference coverage.

 

Elsewhere, the ETUC published new research today that says a 50% average increase in energy costs this year would see the average EU household’s energy bill rise from €3,792 to €5,688: equivalent to just over 12% of total household expenditure. Esther Lynch, ETUC general secretary said: “This research lays bare the devastating consequences for working people and their families of the failure to address Europe’s dependency on highly volatile fossil fuels."
