Conference Opens
by Niall Shanahan

Emmet Malone's interview with Kevin Callinan is available here. On public service pay talks, Kevin said they will need to address not just pay in the context of heightened food and fuel inflation: "They will also need to address the Government’s lack of support for workers and their families through income tax indexation or other measures in the last budget but also workplace issues such as artificial intelligence (AI) and outsourcing and broader societal concerns around housing, childcare and transport infrastructure."

Elsewhere, RTÉ's Brian O'Donovan tees up the conference agenda for Killarney, including the NEC motion on artificial intelligence, calling for the inclusion of AI-related clauses in the forthcoming public service pay negotiations. Elsewhere in RTÉ news, Ronan Carbery writes: "AI technology is moving faster than regulation and the power imbalance favours the employer, yet the coordinated use of rights can help workers push back."

Ahead of tomorrow's presentation of the findings of Fórsa's major new research on remote and hybrid working, the Western Development Commission (WDC) and Atlantic Technological University (ATU) have announced a new partnership to study how remote and hybrid working has reshaped the Irish economy and lifestyle

Meanwhile, Minister for Public Expenditure Jack Chambers is "facing a ministerial backlash over his plans to tighten spending discipline and introduce levies to pay for cost overruns in the Department of Education."

Have a great day, and a safe journey to Killarney if you're heading that way today.
