“Donald Trump’s latest tariff threats pose a severe risk to the Irish economy, and we are deeply concerned about the potential impact on workers in Ireland. Given the seriousness of the current situation, we are urging the Government to work with trade unions on immediate contingency planning to ensure workers are protected in the event of a trade war” - from a statement issued yesterday by Irish Congress of Trade Unions General Secretary Owen Reidy. 

 

Denis Staunton's Irish Times Global Briefing this morning focuses on Canadian premiere Mark Carney's speech at the World Economic Forum taking place in Davos this week. Carney was defiant and articulate, providing a view of how the EU might approach the escalating threat, without recourse to the whispering and appeasement that has characterised efforts thus far.
