In European news, the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) has described the European Commission’s Competitiveness Compass, published yesterday, as a document making “countless promises” to the EU’s business community but fails to include “a commitment to a single piece of legislation” that would benefit ordinary citizens. ETUC general secretary Esther Lynch said “Unfortunately, quality jobs are an afterthought to deregulation in this plan.” The ETUC represents 45 million European workers.

 

Elsewhere, Emmet Malone reports that, according to a survey of principals and deputy principals, three-quarters of secondary schools that have recently advertised a teaching vacancy received no applications
