Jack McGinley
by Niall Shanahan

RTE education correspondent Emma O'Kelly has this piece on the broadcaster's website, with case studies of a number of children due to receive in-school therapies. Fórsa is quoted in the article as the union has voiced its concerns about attempts to redeploy therapists from CDNTs (already coping themselves with staff shortages) to these school pilots.

Unions, including Fórsa, will meet HSE management this morning for an informal engagement this morning over the outstanding and unresolved pay issues in the community and voluntary sector (Section 39, Section 56 and Section 10 organisations). The Indo reports the meeting taking place in the context of the aftermath of Simon Harris's Kanturk diplomacy.

Speaking of which, the Irish Times political team seem to be at pains to soften our impressions of that encounter, and today are talking about 'the way back' after the blip in the polling. And there's good news for Sinn Féin.

I was saddened to learn last night that Jack McGinley has died. I had the enormous pleasure of working alongside Jack in the run-up to the first Robert Tressell Festival. Jack was a lovely man with a big presence, a fierce passion for labour history and an enviable collection of colourful waistcoats. The union activist, labour historian and publisher worked for more than 40 years in the Trinity College library, and was a representative and activist involved with the Workers’ Union of Ireland, the Federated Workers’ Union of Ireland and then Siptu. Ar dheis dé go raibh a hanam.

Zen

As a tribute to Jack, this is a song I hope he might have liked.

Have a great day.
