Tea Party
by Niall Shanahan

Irish Examiner reporter Niamh Griffin provides a snapshot of yesterday's Fórsa/Unison health conference in Dundalk, which includes quotes and photos from the event.

On public sector pay talks, the WRC has invited the parties to meet later this morning to formally update the Commission on their positions, and the Public Accounts Committee today will hear that Revenue collected €127 billion last year, while the Indo and Examiner report on yesterday's Dáil committee engagement with ICTU and Ibec.

The INMO launched a new amalgamated Kerry branch this week to represent nurses and midwives working in the public and private sector in the county. The branch will represent over 1,400 nurses. The message from the launch is that affordable housing for healthcare staff in Kerry is needed, and must be a priority to help recruitment of nurses in the county and in particular in community hospitals.

Kudos to Seamus Gillespie, who challenged his redundancy on the basis of age discrimination and received compensation, in a case supported by the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland.

Looking at trends in the Irish labour market, global recruitment firm Morgan McKinley has reported declines in the numbers of openings, professionals seeking new roles and the rate at which wages were rising during the final quarter of 2023, "suggesting a stabilisation of the Irish jobs market."

Zen

Spare a thought for Michelle Francl, a chemistry professor at Bryn Mawr College in the US. His experience of drinking tea in the US state of Pennsylvania has been so bad, he's devoted a chunk of his life to creating the perfect cuppa.

Some of his advice may offend the Irish palate to the point that the Barrys and Lyons devotees may finally end their cold civil war long enough to say "Salt?...in tea? Never!"

It's possible Professor Francl's understanding of the Boston Tea Party is that the Sons of Liberty were attempting to brew the tea in the briney waters of Boston Harbour.

Have a gorgeous day.

Niall
