Athlone Screamer
by Niall Shanahan

DPER minister Paschal Donohoe spoke to RTÉ's Claire Byrne yesterday. A wide ranging interview, there's about four minutes on the public sector pay talks in the final third of the interview, which you can listen back to here.

On today's strikes, ICTU general secretary Owen Reidy is about to go on RTÉ's Morning Ireland (at around 08:20), as Congress describes the strikes today as “the most significant single day of action for the trade union movement in a generation”, the Irish Times talks to six striking workers.

On public spending, the same paper reports that a Government plan to surge policing in Dublin, following street violence last year, has quietly ended after the €10 million budget for the operation was spent and not renewed, and also reports that the Defence Forces must spend almost half a million euro on training pilots for the ailing Government jet, despite official warnings the aircraft will not last another year

A few weeks to go before the League of Ireland premiere league gets underway, but the pre-season fun started last weekend. St Pat's paid a visit to Athlone Town last Saturday, and this screamer of a goal from Tommy Lonergan was so good, even our retired colleague Ray Ryan (who was there) was impressed. C'mon the Saints!

Have a great day
