Wheat Field with Cypresses
by Niall Shanahan

This morning's breaking news is about the military coup taking place in Myanmar.

The appointment of former ICTU general secretary David Begg as chair of the WRC has been announced. Elsewhere, reports are circulating that firefighters in Dublin are considering strike action due to delays in receiving Covid-19 vaccines, while Ryanair has said it expects to report a net loss of between of between €850m and €950m this year.

Yesterday's Business Post led with concerns among senior officials at Dublin City Council that the local authority is paying above the odds for social housing at a rate of €100,000 more per unit. The paper includes an OpEd about the issue from Sinn Féin's housing spokesperson, Eoin Ó Broin.

Elsewhere, bad news reported in the Sunday Times for Fórsa's north Dublin neighbourhood, as a joint venture with DCC to redevelop Parnell Square West as a cultural quarter is quietly wound down. The Irish Times reports today that DCC will spend €2 billion to bring 8,000 of its dated and run-down flats up to mandatory EU standards.

Zen

Your Zen this morning features a recreation of Van Gogh's Wheat Field with Cypresses (rendered in fresh laundry) by 12-year-old Evan Shanahan. One of the many innovative projects assigned by his teacher Máiréad helping to keep Evan and his classmates imaginations stimulated in these dreary home-schooling days. Click on the image above to see one of the original versions of Van Gogh's painting of the scene.

Have a good week, stay safe. Walk tall.
