Nothing compared

Here’s a look at what it says in this morning’s front pages.

Food delivery riders across Dublin daily are victims of assaults, bicycle theft and other crimes, a group of the workers told gardaí at a meeting last evening. Riders and their representatives said they are routinely targeted and feel their complaints are not taken seriously. Several said they no longer reported thefts or assaults as it meant additional loss of earnings with little hope of their bicycles being recovered or any prosecutions.

The Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) has published this blog post outlining the latest ‘Stop the Stigma’ coalition campaign and the work of all the unions in progressing menstrual and menopausal welfare policies in workplaces.

The Journal reports most of Ireland’s local authorities did not collect any money from the owners of derelict sites last year despite the growing housing crisis, while many authorities didn’t even impose the levy on a single site in their jurisdiction.

Parents have decried the state of the country’s Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) following the publication of a damning new report. The study into the provision of the service by the Inspector of Mental Health Services, Dr Susan Finnerty, was published by the Mental Health Commission (MHC) yesterday and found that the state cannot currently provide assurances children have access to a safe, effective and evidence-based service.

The leadership of the Garda Representative Association (GRA) has voted in favour of a ballot of all its members on a vote of no confidence in the Garda Commissioner Drew Harris. Gardaí are currently engaged in a major industrial relations dispute with Harris over his decision to push through a working time roster they believe will adversely affect  members.

And in other news, Ireland lost out to Canada 2-1 in the team’s second World Cup game despite a goal from Katie McCabe in the fourth minute of the match.

The country is reeling this evening over the news of the passing of Sinéad O’Connor at the age of 56.

The singer-songwriter was propelled to international stardom in 1990 with her version of Nothing Compares 2 U. Written by Prince, Sinéad made the ballad her own and topped the charts around the world.

The simple but unforgettable accompanying video featured almost nothing else but a close-up frame of Sinéad singing with tears rolling down her cheeks. May she rest in peace.
