Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has pledged the Government’s support to library staff who are being harassed and intimidated by right-wing protesters objecting to LGBTQ+ literature in public libraries across the country. Fórsa are staging a solidarity protest outside Cork City’s main library on Friday. 

 

Minister for Media Catherine Martin will meet Chair of the RTÉ Board Siún Ní Raghallaigh, incoming RTÉ Director General Kevin Bakhurst and interim deputy Director General Adrian Lynch at her department this morning. Board chairwoman Siún Ní Raghallaigh has flagged a “high probability” of further revelations of financial scandal to come at RTÉ at a third Oireachtas committee session in eight days, which saw unprecedented criticism of the executive by the chair and her predecessor. 

 

An “exponential” rise in legal claims against the Irish cervical cancer screening programme risks rendering it financially unsustainable, a World Health Organisation (WHO) agency has warned. The CervicalCheck programme was potentially liable for €300 million in legal claims by last August, against an operating budget of just €34 million in 2019, according to the report by the WHO’s cancer arm.

 

The Women of Honour group, which has raised allegations of sexual attacks and other abuses in the Defence Forces, has accused Tánaiste Micheál Martin of ignoring victims by moving to “ram through flawed terms of reference” for an abuse inquiry.

 

Workers at Tara Mines in Co Meath began staging a protest at the mine last night over plans to temporarily close the facility. The owners of Tara Mines, Boliden, have confirmed plans to suspend operations at the mine and temporarily lay off 650 workers later this month.

 

Regular screening and investment in equipment are among the measures needed to address the far higher than usual cancer death rates among firefighters, according to their representatives at the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (Ictu) biennial conference in Kilkenny.
