It's #MayDay. Time to celebrate the workers

by Niall Shanahan

Here's a look at the front pages for Tuesday 1st May. The CervicalCheck inquiry continues to dominate the Irish front pages.

The Irish Examiner reports that the outgoing director general of the HSE was warned more than a decade ago that outsourcing the analysis of cervical cancer screening results could lead to the type of crisis which has now engulfed the system.

Elsewhere, the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform has published its annual report, while Bernard's letter in last Friday's Irish Times is part of a continuing debate in the letters pages about the cause of the economic crisis, though it does not feature in today's edition.

The alliterative section of the daily news cycle continues with Barnier, Brexit and The Border, while the House of Lords has voted to allow parliament to reject a withdrawal agreement without triggering an exit from the European Union with no deal. Barnier says there's a “real risk” that the EU and UK will fail to agree a deal on Brexit without a solution to avoid a hard border. The hot mess continues.

The Labour Court has found a doctor's secretary was discriminated against as she wins her case for dismissal while on maternity leave.

Name that city

By far the most popular incorrect answer for our 'name that city' survey yesterday was Cork, which is the most Cork thing I've witnessed in a while. Two people said Dublin, and there was one vote each for Waterford, Liverpool and Bristol. Some of those entries came from some people who really ought to know better, just sayin'.

In the end I received only one correct answer, and that was from our Dublin City Council colleague Paul O'Halloran, who correctly identified the city of Derry. Well done Paul.

Your moment of Zen today is one of the more colourful May Day related videos I've come across. It's a catchy tune, billed as "a tribute to the working class" and comes all the way from Telangana in India (the song is sung in the dialect of Telugu).
