The controversy over the ownership of the new National Maternity Hospital resurfaced yesterday as Cabinet delayed its decision on the future of the hospital.

 
A farmer whose employer sent a private detective to his farm to take pictures of him working after he was injured on the job has been awarded €12,000. The Workplace Relations Commission has been told Dawn Meats hired an investigator who spent three days carrying out “covert surveillance” of the man at his home while he was on sick leave in 2020.

 

Medical scientists are set to take industrial action later this month in frustration over long-standing pay and career development issues. The Medical Laboratory Scientists Association (MLSA) had previously served noticed of industrial action in March. However, it was suspended after the group was invited into new talks under the dispute resolution mechanism of the Building Momentum Public Service Pay Agreement.

 

Meanwhile, the Communications Workers' Union has warned that the future of An Post is "gravely uncertain" without Government investment to protect and maintain vital services. Addressing the union's biennial conference in Athlone, CWU General Secretary Seán McDonagh said that the financial impacts of Covid-19 had placed a huge burden on An Post.

A major overhaul of the National Parks & Wildlife Service (NPWS) is to see it restructured as an executive agency under a €55 million package. A decision taken by the Cabinet on Tuesday also allows for an “emergency staffing provision” which would see an extra 60 staff appointed to key roles in the short term.

In other news, the Taoiseach has condemned a broadcast on Russian state television which showed a mock nuclear attack destroying Ireland, saying it was a “very sinister, intimidatory-type tactic by the Russian Federation”.

The first major study since Brexit of UK citizens living in the EU has revealed its profound impact on their lives, with many expressing serious concerns over their loss of free movement and voting rights – and a very different perception of Britain.

 

New research finds Non-religious teachers are hiding or suppressing their beliefs over fears it could affect their employment or promotion prospects in schools with a religious ethos. The findings are contained in a cross-Border study by Dr Catherine Stapleton of Mary Immaculate College and Dr James Nelson of Queen’s University Belfast.

Finally, on this day in 1974, ABBA were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Waterloo', the group's first of nine UK No.1 singles was the 1974 Eurovision song contest winner for Sweden. Fun fact, this song was first called 'Honey Pie'.
