Teachers' Union of Ireland (TUI) members have voted in favour of industrial action by a margin of 92%, over lower pay for new entrants to the profession. TUI president Seamus Lahart says teachers are fed up with two-tier pay, and frustrated by Government inaction, adding that he hopes the vote will persuade Education Minister Joe McHugh to enter talks.

 

The Financial Service Union (FSU) has called for "right to disconnect" legislation, at a launch marking World Mental Health Day. The union said workers should not be obliged to answer calls or reply to emails, or engage in any work-related activity outside of paid working hours.

 

The Irish Times reports upcoming research on the hospitality sector by an NUIG lecturer has found a “culture of ill-treatment within the hospitality sector” including widespread sexual harassment, bullying and verbal abuse. Dr Deirdre Curran said workers in the sector were “crying out for protection,” while presenting findings to an Oireachtas Committee yesterday.

 

Free contraception for women will be available from 2021, according to Minister for Health Simon Harris. The report of a working group on the issue is set to be published later this month.
