Inflation is back in the news this week as it rose to 6.3 per cent in August, driven by a more than 50 per cent jump in mortgage interest rates in the last 12 months. Meanwhile, as corporation tax receipts fall by a billion, Cliff Taylor asks if the party's over.

In other economic news, the DPER minister  says plans to deliver a budget package of about €6.4 billion will proceed even if there is more “volatility” in Ireland’s tax receipts this year.

Elsewhere, the justice minister is to publish a “safety plan” for Dublin’s north inner city, involving the deployment of “safety wardens” and upgrades to key commercial streets including O’Connell Street and Talbot Street. Among other objectives, the plan is to "combat the “rumour culture” and “fake news” particularly in relation to “racial stereotypes” about those fleeing war and other international protection applicants."

As the weekend approaches, here's an early Pixies classic, written by (probably) the coolest bass player of all time, Kim Deal. Have a lovely weekend.
