The Cabinet meets this morning in Dublin, with ministers expected to finalise a Government counter-motion to a Sinn Féin proposal to extend the eviction ban.

 

UN secretary general António Guterres is to push G20 countries to commit to a global climate solidarity pact, whereby all big carbon emitters scale up efforts to cut their greenhouse gas emissions. Elsewhere, scientists have made ‘disturbing’ plastic rocks find on a remote island off the coast of Brazil. Read more on that here.

 

The Government is due to launch a national action plan to tackle racism in response to evidence of what the plan describes as "the persistence of racial discrimination across many spheres of life". Meanwhile, the Irish Congress of Trade Unions and business group Ibec have released a joint statement to mark International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, recommitting themselves to the elimination of racism and discrimination in the workplace.

SIPTU has said that new figures clearly indicate that the staffing crisis in the childcare sector is not driven by a lack of qualified educators in Ireland but low pay forcing many to leave their chosen profession. Read more on that here. 

 

The first Irish study of people who were stalked or harassed found that over half did not report incidents to An Garda Síochána, with only 42 per cent going to the gardaí. 

 

A bartender who accidentally got a voice note from her supervisor stating that she had been ordered to “get rid” of the worker because of her anxiety disorder has been awarded €10,000 for a discriminatory constructive dismissal.

 

And finally, the French government has survived two no-confidence motions in parliament, but still faced intense pressure over its handling of a controversial pensions reform.
