The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) yesterday announced 95% of members voted for strike action over pay and staff shortages. The ballot result was covered widely, with analysis pieces in the Irish Times and Indo this morning. The INMO executive will meet on the 7th and 8th of January to set dates for a series of 24-hour stoppages. It follows the announcement of the Psychiatric Nurses Association (PNA) also voting for industrial action up to and including strike action by a margin of 95% on Monday.

 

The European Commission is set to publish a series of notices in preparation for a potential no-deal Brexit. The notices will cover a range of sectors that will be affected if the UK leaves the EU at the end of March without a withdrawal agreement, including transport, citizens' rights, customs, environmental policy and financial services.

 

RTÉ reports on concerns about an overspend of €450 million on the construction of the National Children's Hospital, with the Minister for finance Paschal Donohoe reportedly set to bring proposals to Cabinet in January. Concerns have also raised that the National Children's Hospital's current design would breach an EU energy directive.

 

The Irish National Teachers Organisation (INTO) has elected John Boyle to be its next general secretary. He is set to replace the current INTO general secretary and Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) president Sheila Nunan next year. Mr Boyle is a former president of the INTO.
